WWI German 1914 King Ludwig III Bavaria Christmas in France Feldpost Military Postcard

Original WWI Bavarian military Feldpost postcard featuring a color portrait of King Ludwig III of Bavaria, the last King of Bavaria. The portrait is by noted German artist Walther Firle.

This is a particularly interesting Christmas 1914 wartime issue, produced during the first Christmas of World War I.

The printed inscription beneath the portrait reads:

“Den braven Angehörigen Meiner Regimenter zur Erinnerung an das Weihnachtsfest 1914.”

Translation:

“To the brave members of my regiments, in remembrance of Christmas 1914.”

Below the inscription is a printed/facsimile “Ludwig” signature.

The reverse is headed “Feldpostkarte” — “Field Postcard” and is unused. A handwritten collector’s notation identifies it as:

“Weihnachten in Peronne-Hemincourt (Nordfrankreich)”

Translation:

“Christmas in Péronne-Hemincourt (Northern France).”

This makes for an excellent WWI historical piece associated with Bavarian troops serving in France during the opening months of the war. The Christmas 1914 inscription is especially desirable, connecting the card directly with the first wartime Christmas.

The portrait shows Ludwig III in Bavarian military uniform with sash and decorations and is boldly captioned:

“LUDWIG III KÖNIG V. BAYERN”
“Ludwig III, King of Bavaria.”

Original period postcard with light age and handling wear. Overall an attractive example with strong color. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition. Item shown is the exact item you will receive.
