WWII German 1942 KLV Lager 45 Tatra Lomnica Slovakia Children Camp Letter Cover

Original WWII German Kinderlandverschickung (KLV) correspondence, consisting of the original envelope and a lengthy multi-page handwritten letter dated 5 November 1942. The envelope is addressed to H. Fassenscheidt, KLV-Lager 45, Haus Horni, Tatra-Lomnica, in what is today Tatranská Lomnica, Slovakia.

This is an especially interesting piece of KLV history because the surviving letter discusses the children, their experiences in the camp, the Lagermädelführerin, and the approaching end of their stay. Archival records confirm that the KLV organization operated camps in Slovakia, and surviving contemporary accounts document German children being housed in camps and hotels throughout the High Tatra region.

The envelope is marked “Slowakei” and “Lagerleiterin” and is dated 14.XI.42. The destination is clearly written:

“KLV-Lager 45, Haus Horni
Tatra-Lomnica”

The enclosed letter is headed:

“Kaltherberg, den 5. Nov. 1942”

and addressed:

“Liebes Frl. Fassenscheidt!”
— “Dear Miss Fassenscheidt!”

The writer thanks her for her kind lines of 28 September 1942 and says she was very pleased by her favorable information. A particularly significant passage reads approximately:

“Auch ich hoffe und glaube es bestimmt, daß die Kinder aus ihrem Lagerleben wertvolle Erkenntnisse und bleibende Erinnerungen für ihr ganzes Leben mitnehmen.”

Translation:

“I too hope and firmly believe that the children will take valuable experiences and lasting memories from their camp life with them for their entire lives.”

The letter goes on to discuss letters received from Hildegard, the children’s experiences in the mountains and gorges, at lakes and waterfalls, and the adventures and impressions they had accumulated.

Later the writer specifically praises the recipient:

“Sie liebe Frl. Fassenscheidt können versichert sein, ich bin zufrieden mit Ihren Leistungen, die Sie an den Kindern vollbracht haben. Sie haben Ihre Sache gut gemacht.”

Translation:

“Dear Miss Fassenscheidt, you can be assured that I am satisfied with what you have accomplished for the children. You have done your job well.”

The writer also mentions “die Mädelschaftsführerin Anneliese” and another female leader named Ria, showing the leadership structure surrounding the girls in the camp.

Toward the end comes an especially evocative passage:

“Nun nähert sich die Lagerzeit dem Ende. Ich freue mich ja so unsagbar auf das Wiedersehen…”

Translation:

“Now the time at the camp is drawing to an end. I am looking forward indescribably to seeing them again…”

She hopes they will recognize one another personally at the railway station and expresses her gratitude to the camp leadership.

The letter is signed “Ihre Frau Wiggershaus” and the envelope identifies the sender as Fr. Wiggershaus, Kaltherberg über Gevelsberg (Westf.), Deutschland.

The Expanded Kinderlandverschickung relocated German schoolchildren from cities threatened by air raids into camps in comparatively safer areas, including occupied and allied territories. Surviving KLV sources include camp diaries, parent correspondence and newsletters from precisely this 1941–1944 period.

Condition: The handwritten letter itself remains quite clean and highly legible with original folds. The envelope has considerably heavier wear, including tears and paper loss along the upper edge, opened edges, creasing, toning and general handling wear. Both are shown in detail in the photographs.
