Exceptional original WWII German Eastern Front grouping of three typewritten New Year poems/writings, produced by German soldiers serving in Russia during the winter of 1941/42.
One of the documents carries the handwritten notation “Rußland 1941/42” (Russia 1941/42) at the upper right. Together, these writings provide a fascinating firsthand glimpse into the mentality of German soldiers spending New Year’s far from home during the early Eastern Front campaign.
The three pieces are titled “Gedanken zur Jahreswende” (Thoughts at the Turn of the Year), “Neujahr” (New Year), and “Erste Wacht im neuen Jahr!” (First Watch in the New Year!).
1. Gedanken zur Jahreswende – “Thoughts at the Turn of the Year”
A lengthy soldier’s New Year’s reflection describing a lone sentry standing in a foreign land on a dark night. He thinks about Germany, the battlefield, fallen comrades, previous fighting, wounds, hardship and his family at home.
The writing becomes increasingly patriotic and military in character, speaking of Germany’s honor, the German armies marching again, defeating the enemy, remaining united behind the Führer and ultimately achieving victory.
It concludes with the typewritten name/rank:
“Gefr. Muehlmann”
(Gefreiter Muehlmann)
The handwritten “Rußland 1941/42” notation is particularly noteworthy and strongly places the document in the context of the first winter of the German campaign in the Soviet Union.
2. Neujahr – “New Year”
A shorter and considerably more somber poem concerning the transition from the old year to the new.
The soldier reflects upon being in a foreign country, longing for home and remembering comrades who will not live to see the New Year. The final lines express the hope:
“Dass uns der Endsieg blühen soll / Und Friedensglocken läuten!”
Approximately translated:
“That final victory may blossom for us, and the bells of peace may ring!”
It is credited:
“Gefr. Petzny”
(Gefreiter Petzny)
3. Erste Wacht im neuen Jahr! – “First Watch in the New Year!”
A lengthy poem describing a German soldier standing his first guard watch of the New Year during a crystal-clear snowy night.
He looks at the stars and remembers his wife and child as well as fallen comrades. The poem specifically describes comrades who “gave their lives for the Fatherland” and then shifts back toward determination for the coming year.
Its concluding passages declare that the enemy will be defeated and finish with the emphatic line:
“Der Sieg wird unser sein!”
“Victory will be ours!”
The piece is credited at the bottom:
“Ogefr. Mueller, H.”
(Obergefreiter H. Mueller)
Historical Interest
This is an especially interesting group because these are not simply military forms or routine correspondence. They are soldier-written or soldier-attributed poems reflecting the emotional and ideological atmosphere surrounding German troops on the Eastern Front.
The writings combine several themes characteristic of wartime soldier material: homesickness, family, comradeship, death, battlefield experiences, wounds, duty, the Führer, Germany, victory, and hopes for eventually returning home.
The handwritten Russia 1941/42 notation gives the grouping additional historical context. The winter of 1941–42 was an extraordinarily significant period on the Eastern Front, making New Year’s writings attributed to soldiers serving there particularly evocative pieces of wartime ephemera.
Condition
All three documents show considerable genuine period use and age. There are old horizontal and vertical folds, wrinkles, toning, scattered staining, edge tears, small paper losses, punched filing holes and general handling wear.
The “Erste Wacht im neuen Jahr!” sheet has particularly noticeable edge deterioration and losses. The condition is clearly visible in the photographs and is consistent with documents that were carried, folded, stored and handled for many decades.
Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition. You will receive the original documents shown.
A very unusual 1941/42 Eastern Front soldier poetry grouping with strong historical content and excellent research/display potential.
