WWII German Junkers Ju 90 “Der Grosse Dessauer” Luftwaffe Photo Postcard 1941

Excellent original Third Reich-era real photographic postcard featuring the massive German Junkers Ju 90 four-engine transport aircraft, one of the most impressive large German aircraft of the prewar/WWII period.

The aircraft pictured is prominently marked:

“D-AALU – DER GROSSE DESSAUER”

The printed caption identifies it as:

“Junkers Ju 90 Großraum-Schnellverkehrsflugzeug für 40 Fluggäste – 350 km/h Reisegeschwindigkeit”

Translation:

“Junkers Ju 90 large-capacity high-speed transport aircraft for 40 passengers – cruising speed 350 km/h.”

The photograph provides an outstanding in-flight view of the four-engine aircraft, including its distinctive twin-tail configuration, registration D-AALU, large wing markings and swastika tail emblem.

D-AALU “Der Grosse Dessauer”

This is particularly interesting because D-AALU was an individually named Ju 90, “Der Grosse Dessauer” (“The Great Dessauer”). The Ju 90 was developed by Junkers as a large four-engine passenger and transport aircraft and was closely related to Junkers’ work on large military aircraft.

Only a relatively small number of Ju 90s were constructed, making period postcards depicting the type considerably more interesting than the much more commonly encountered Ju 52.

Even better, this example was actually mailed during WWII. The reverse retains its original 6 Pfennig Deutsches Reich Hindenburg definitive postage stamp and a clearly struck Neumünster circular cancellation.

The handwritten correspondence is dated:

12.12.1941

This gives the card excellent wartime postal-history interest in addition to its aviation subject matter. The reverse is extensively handwritten in German in blue ink.

Condition:

Original period-used condition with considerable age and handling wear. The corners show wear and remnants/residue consistent with the postcard having once been mounted in an album. There is surface wear, spotting/soiling and some edge wear. The reverse is extensively written upon and retains the original postage stamp and cancellation. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.

A particularly desirable combination of WWII German aviation, Junkers aircraft, real photographic postcard and genuine wartime postal history. The clearly identified Ju 90 D-AALU “Der Grosse Dessauer” makes this a much stronger aviation collectible than a generic aircraft postcard.
