WWII German Kriegsmarine La Paloma Sailor Song Postcard Military Feldpost 1941

Original WWII-era German Kriegsmarine / naval song postcard featuring “La Paloma – Die weiße Taube” (The White Dove), the famous maritime song associated with sailors and life at sea.

The front features a dramatic image of a white dove flying above rough seas and a harbor breakwater, followed by the German-language lyrics. The song is credited at the bottom to Sebastián de Yradier, the Spanish composer who wrote the original La Paloma.

The German version is written from the perspective of a sailor leaving home and his mother to go to sea. The lyrics reference being aboard ship, sailors, the rolling sea, returning home, his sweetheart Nina, marriage, and the white dove as a symbol of remembrance and longing.

The recurring naval refrain begins:

“Auf Matrosen, ohe! In die wogende See!”

Approximately:

“Come on, sailors! Into the rolling sea! Dark thoughts sway and quickly flee from us like storm and wind.”

WWII Feldpost / Military Use

The reverse is handwritten and appears to have been actually mailed through the German military Feldpost system rather than simply being an unused song card.

Of particular interest is the circular military postal marking at lower left, which appears to include a Feldpost number/unit designation. The recipient side is also handwritten, giving the card genuine wartime postal-history interest in addition to its Kriegsmarine/naval theme.

Condition

Authentic period-used condition with substantial age toning, foxing/staining, corner and edge wear, creasing and general handling wear. There is a small dark spot/hole on the reverse. The wear gives the card considerable period character but should be carefully reviewed in the photographs.

An excellent crossover collectible for Kriegsmarine, Feldpost, German military postal history, maritime music and WWII ephemera collectors.
