Offered here is a vintage post-WWII photographic reprint depicting a Wehrmacht soldier taking cover amid the shattered ruins during the Battle of Stalingrad in October 1942. Armed with an MP 40 submachine gun and positioned among heavy rubble, the soldier represents the brutal urban combat that made Stalingrad one of the most significant and devastating battles of the Second World War.
This is not an original wartime photograph. It is an early 1956 archive reprint, identified by the “US WW2 Photo Archives 1956 – Washington D.C.” stamp on the reverse. The reverse is also hand-captioned “Wehrmacht – Battle of Stalingrad Oct. 1942.”
The Battle of Stalingrad (August 1942 – February 1943) marked a decisive turning point on the Eastern Front. Fierce house-to-house fighting reduced much of the city to rubble, and the eventual encirclement and surrender of the German Sixth Army dramatically shifted the momentum of the war. Photographs from the battle remain among the most powerful visual records of World War II.
