Original period German postcard showing the impressive Königsberg Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station of Königsberg in East Prussia.

The printed front caption reads:

“Königsberg i/Pr. – Hauptbahnhof”
Translation: “Königsberg in Prussia – Main Railway Station.”

The photograph provides an excellent period view of the station complex, with railway/tram cars, pedestrians and vehicles visible in front.

Königsberg was the historic capital of East Prussia and an important German transportation and military center. The city was heavily damaged during WWII and subsequently became Kaliningrad, part of the Soviet Union after the war and today part of the Russian Federation.

Because of the dramatic transformation of Königsberg during and after WWII, original pre-1945 views of the city’s streets, buildings and transportation infrastructure are particularly interesting pieces of East Prussian history.
