Original WWII German propaganda postcard featuring a dramatic image of a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 bomber in flight and the lyrics to the wartime aviation song “Bomben auf Engelland” (Bombs on England).

The card identifies the song as being from the Luftwaffe film “Feuertaufe” (Baptism of Fire) by Hans Bertram, with lyrics by Wilhelm Stöppler and music by noted German composer Norbert Schultze. The song was written in connection with Feuertaufe, the 1939/1940 propaganda documentary concerning Luftwaffe operations during the invasion of Poland, and was subsequently associated with the air war against Britain.

The Library of Congress German National Music Collection also catalogs “Bomben auf Engelland” by Norbert Schultze as a 1940 work, making this an interesting piece of surviving wartime aviation and propaganda ephemera.

Front Details:

  • Large photograph of a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 twin-engine bomber
  • Bold Gothic-script title “Bomben auf Engelland”
  • Identified as a song from Hans Bertram’s Luftwaffe film Feuertaufe
  • Words by Wilhelm Stöppler
  • Music by Norbert Schultze
  • Printed first verse and chorus
  • Publisher information on reverse: Ross-Verlag, Berlin W50
  • Card number R 105

Postal Use:
This example is period mailed, with handwritten correspondence on the reverse, a purple 6 Pfennig Third Reich Hitler head stamp, and circular postal cancellation. The cancellation appears to read Riesa, although portions are obscured by the stamp and handwriting.

Front Text Translation:

“Bombs on England”

We feel in our airfields and heights
the eagle’s daring happiness!
We climb toward the gate of the sun,
leaving the earth behind.

The chorus calls the airmen to prepare for departure and advance against the enemy, concluding with the repeated title “Bomben auf Engelland!”

This is an especially displayable example combining several collecting areas: WWII German aviation, Luftwaffe history, Heinkel He 111 aircraft, wartime propaganda, postal history, Ross-Verlag postcards, and Third Reich philately.

Condition:
Original period-used postcard showing expected age, handling, corner/edge wear, light staining/toning and postal use. Writing, stamp and cancellation remain present on the reverse. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition. See ruler if pictured for size comparison.

A desirable original WWII German aviation postcard with a particularly striking Heinkel bomber image and strong historical connection to Luftwaffe wartime propaganda.
