Original WWII German Feldpost correspondence card dated July 1943, featuring a large printed representation of the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen (Infantry Assault Badge / IAB).
This is an especially attractive military-themed Feldpost card. The front displays the Infantry Assault Badge with its distinctive rifle and bayonet surrounded by an oak-leaf wreath and topped by the German national eagle and swastika. Beneath the design is the printed title:
“INFANTERIE-STURMABZEICHEN”
Translation: “Infantry Assault Badge.”
The Infantry Assault Badge was instituted in 1939 and awarded to qualifying German infantry personnel who participated in infantry assaults and combat actions. The imagery makes this a desirable crossover collectible for both Feldpost/postal-history collectors and German combat-award collectors.
Postal & Military Details
The card is genuinely wartime used and includes:
- FELDPOST printed prominently on the address side
- Postal cancellation dated 29.7.43
- Cancellation appears to read Roman / Romanau, indicating use in the Romanian theater
- Handwritten sender information at lower left
- Addressed to a Gefreiter (corporal)
- Destination line includes Wien – Vienna
- Military/postal routing information
- Separate handwritten message dated 27.VII.43
- Publisher: Steiniger-Bilddrucke Verlagsgesellschaft m.b.H., Berlin SW 68
- Card number 1
The separate handwritten message begins “Lieber Fritz!” – “Dear Fritz!” and is dated 27 July 1943. It appears to be friendly correspondence between servicemen, with references to receiving mail and military circumstances. Some of the old German cursive is difficult to decipher confidently, so the photographs should be used as the definitive reference for the complete text.
Historical Interest
Unlike a generic Feldpost card, this example specifically depicts one of the best-known German infantry combat decorations of WWII. The combination of the Infantry Assault Badge artwork, 1943 date, Feldpost usage, military recipient, Romanian-area postal marking and surviving handwritten correspondence gives it excellent display and research appeal.
Condition
Original wartime-used condition. There is a prominent diagonal crease running through the address portion, along with lighter creasing, handling marks, toning, edge/corner wear and other age-related wear. The Infantry Assault Badge illustration remains bold and attractive.
Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition. You will receive the exact original card shown.
