WWII Nazi German Third Reich Luftwaffe Ju 88 Sicily Color Postcard Mediterranean

Original WWII German Luftwaffe color postcard from the series “Unsere Luftwaffe im Mittelmeerraum” — Our Luftwaffe in the Mediterranean Region.

This is Bild 4 (Picture No. 4) of the series and features a particularly striking scene photographed in Sicily, showing a German Junkers Ju 88 twin-engine combat aircraft on an airfield alongside a traditional two-wheeled Sicilian cart pulled by two elaborately decorated horses. The juxtaposition of the modern Luftwaffe aircraft with traditional Sicilian transportation makes this an especially interesting wartime image.

The printed German caption reads:

“Seltsame Begegnung auf Sizilien: ein zweirädriger Karren mit den buntgeschmückten Pferden, wie er in Süditalien überall üblich ist, und ein Kampfflugzeug Junkers-Ju 88.”

English translation:
“Strange encounter in Sicily: a two-wheeled cart with brightly decorated horses, as is common everywhere in southern Italy, and a Junkers Ju 88 combat aircraft.”
