Original Third Reich-era German postcard depicting the famous Haus der Deutschen Kunst (House of German Art) in Munich, shown prominently decorated with large swastika banners.

This is a particularly strong period view of one of the best-known monumental buildings constructed during the Third Reich. The photograph shows the building’s long classical colonnade, broad entrance steps and surrounding grounds, with large Party flags displayed prominently outside.

Printed along the bottom of the front:

“MÜNCHEN – HAUS DER DEUTSCHEN KUNST”

The Haus der Deutschen Kunst was constructed in Munich during the 1930s and opened in 1937. Designed by architect Paul Ludwig Troost, it became a major exhibition building for officially approved German art during the Third Reich period. Today the surviving building is known as the Haus der Kunst.

Postal History

The reverse is particularly interesting and is postally used, bearing an original green 6 Pfennig Deutsches Reich Hindenburg definitive stamp.

The stamp is tied by a clear Third Reich-era circular cancellation that includes:

“HAUPTSTADT DER BEWEGUNG”

or “Capital of the Movement,” the propaganda title officially associated with Munich during the Third Reich.

Also prominently stamped across the reverse is the propaganda slogan:

“Verwende heimische Treibstoffe!”

Translation:

“Use domestic fuels!”

This slogan cancel gives the postcard additional interest as a piece of period German postal and propaganda history.

Condition:
Original period-used postcard with normal age-related handling and postal wear, light toning, edge/corner wear and handwriting on the reverse. The front image remains very sharp with excellent architectural detail, and the original stamp, cancellation and propaganda slogan marking remain present.
